Privacy Policy

1. Introduction
Welcome to Speechable. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our service.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information that you provide directly to us, including:
- Account information (email address, name)
- Documents you upload for text-to-speech conversion
- Usage data and preferences
- Payment information (processed securely by our payment provider)
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain our text-to-speech service
- Process your documents and generate audio
- Improve and personalize your experience
- Communicate with you about your account and updates
- Ensure the security of our service
4. Data Storage and Security
Your documents and data are stored securely using industry-standard encryption. We retain your uploaded documents only for as long as necessary to provide our services. You can delete your documents at any time from your library.
5. Third-Party Services
We use trusted third-party services for authentication, payment processing, email delivery, hosting and analytics. These providers have their own privacy policies and handle your data according to their terms.
6. AI Processing of Your Content
Some Speechable features work by sending your content to third-party AI providers — usually the text of your document, and for some features your voice recording or an image of a page. This is how the following work:
- Converting uploaded PDFs into readable text
- Detecting a document's language and type
- Summarising a document, or answering your questions about it
- Correcting spelling and preparing text for natural-sounding speech
- Converting text into audio
What is sent. Whatever the feature you are using needs to work. For most features that is the text of your document, plus the question you ask when you use chat. For voice input it is your audio recording. For scanned documents and photos it is an image of the page. We do not send your name, email address or account details.
Who receives it. We use the following processors:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| OpenRouter | Routes text to language models for the features listed above |
| Inference providers reached through OpenRouter | Run the language models themselves |
| DeepInfra | Speech-to-text for voice input, text recognition on scanned documents, and text-to-speech on a legacy playback path |
| Modal | Renders full-document audio when you download an MP3, which requires the document's text |
| Speechable's own servers | Text-to-speech during normal playback. This runs on our own infrastructure and your text is not sent to a third party for it |
Training. None of these providers is permitted to use your content to train their models. With OpenRouter we set this on every request and exclude any provider that collects data for training. With DeepInfra it is a commitment in their terms, which say they will not store, sell or train on submissions.
Retention. We do not ask any provider to keep your content, and none of them keeps it to build a profile of you or to train on. Some may hold it briefly — typically for short-term debugging or to detect abuse of their service — under their own terms, and we cannot rule that out on your behalf. Your documents remain stored in your Speechable account until you delete them.
Your choice. Summarising, chat and the editing tools are optional — you can read documents and listen to them without using any of them. Two steps are not optional, because they are how a document becomes readable at all: converting an uploaded PDF into text, and detecting its language and type. Both happen automatically when you import a document. If you would rather that did not happen, do not upload the document. Deleting a document removes it from your account.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your account and associated data
- Export your data
- Opt out of marketing communications
